Gentlemen,

REC

REG JUL 14

Hong Kong.

25th June, 1914.

... 89.

I am directed to inform you that it has been

noticed that in the agreements drawn up with candie-tes sel-

ected for service in this Colony, the rate for may ent of

salaries is shown ne "the average rate of the dollar "cal-

culated from the 15th day of the previous month to the "15th

day of the month for which the salary is to be onid".

2

I enclose the latest General Oruer on the subject

and I shall be glad if you will be so good as to take what-

ever stens you may consider advisable with reference thereto,

but it must be understood that the approval of the Secretary

of State to the privileged rate of exchange has only been

accorded for a period of three years, after which the metter

will be reconsidered by him,

3

It has also in some cases not been clearly stated

whether at the termination of "n agreement the officer is

entitled to a return passage to England and whether during

such passage half pay will be allowed, and I shall be glad

if you will have this made clear in all future agreements.

Such half pay would be issued at the rate of exchange current

on the date of payment.

I am, &c.

Sgd.

Edward Bullock.

Colonial Secretary.
